Welcome to Louisiana

We learned an interesting fact about Louisiana: the state has the highest alligator population in the United States – nearly 2 million alligators in the wild, and thousands more on alligator farms. In Cameron Parish, Louisiana, alligators outnumber people 10 to 1!

The name alligator comes from the Spanish explorers who called them “El legato” or “big lizard.”

Mardi Gras Museum

Located on the top floor of the Central School Arts & Humanities Center, the Mardi Gras Museum is home to the largest collection of Mardi Gras costumes in the country.

We were able to explore room after room of the amazing costumes.

Lake Charles holds the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in America. The curator told us that despite the huge crowds for Mardi Gras, last year there were only two arrests – two friends who got drunk and into a fight with each other!
